Baseball 2016 Review
The baseball team capped a remarkable tournament run with a 3-2, extra-inning win over top-ranked Zionsville at Victory Field in the Class 4A state championship game. During the tournament, the Rebels avenged regular-season losses to Lawrence North (regional semifinal) and Center Grove (semi-state).
A difficult early schedule paid postseason dividends for the Rebels. At one point, the team was 6-5 and 9-7 before winning 14 of its final 16 games to finish with a 23-9 record. Among the Rebels’ nine losses, were eight defeats by a combined 16 runs. As a result of those early tests, the Rebels were able to find a way to win close games over the final month of the season.
Senior Cody Smith and sophomore Nick Schnell shared team MVP honors. Seniors Michael McAvene and Conrad Daniel were named pitchers of the year. Senior Robbie Strader earned the team’s mental attitude award.
McAvene was named second team All-State by USA Today and coach Aaron Kroll was selected the state coach of the year. Schnell was named first team All-State by the Indiana Baseball Coaches Association and McAvene was named second team. McAvene, Schnell and Smith all earned a spot on the Indianapolis Star’s Super Team. That trio also grabbed All-Marion County honors, as did Daniel, who was an All-County honorable mention selection. McAvene was tabbed to play in the North/South All-Star Game.
