Boys' Track & Field
2016 Season Review
The boys’ track team qualified athletes or relays in nine regional events, which is two more than last season and five more than the 2014 campaign. Senior Justin Saylor won a sectional title in the long jump and finished second in the regional as one of the program’s two state qualifiers. Junior Gabe Otley qualified for state in the 400 meters, grabbing one of the last spots out of the regional.
Both athletes were part of school-record efforts. Saylor long jumped 22-11, topping the previous school record by five-and-a-half inches. Otley teamed with his twin brother Michael, fellow junior Kurt Cunningham and senior Michael Schiefelbein to establish a new mark for the 4 X 200 relay (1:33.24). Both the 4 X 400 and the 4 X 800 relay teams ran the second-fastest times in school history.
Gabe Otley, who led the team in points scored, was named the team’s most valuable athlete. Saylor earned the team’s most valuable senior award. Will English won the team’s most valuable junior award. Myles Lyngh collected the most valuable sophomore award. Nick Perkins, who won the 3200 meters at the Marion County Freshman Championships, was the team’s most valuable freshman. Michael Otley won the team’s mental attitude award.
Juniors Luke Smock, Neil O’Brien, Tim Miller, Luke Matis, along with Cunningham, English and Gabe and Michael Otley, were all named Academic All-State. Juniors Tyler Swiezy, Jacob Reiber and senior Justin Saylor earned honorable mention Academic All-State honors.
