2011-2012 Review

The Roncalli Wrestling Team posted wins during the season in the Lafayette Jeff, New Palestine, Warren Central and Westfield Invitationals, and wins over Shelbyville and Franklin Central. The Rebels competed in Marion County and placed 2nd out of 15 teams. Senior Damon Albertson and junior Mason Nickell were champions in their respective weight classes in the Marion County Wrestling Tournament. Damon also was a champion in the Connersville Invitational held over Christmas Break. Rebel wrestlers also advanced to the IHSAA Wrestling Regionals at Perry Meridian High School: Vance Ellis, Barry McGinley, Ryan Hamner, Brennan Ellis, David Mappes, Nick Ader, Logan Zielinski, Danny Rojas, Joe Ardizzone and Shane Briggeman. Senior Danny Rojas was a 2012 Sectional Champion. All of these young, student athletes attempted to qualify for Semi-State Competition, and those advancing included Vance Ellis, Barry McGinley, Brennan Ellis, David Mappes, Logan Zielinski, Danny Rojas and Joe Ardizzone. To round out the season, two Rebel wrestlers, Joe Ardizzone and Barry McGinley competed in the 2012 IHSAA Wrestling State Finals. Joe qualified by virtue of his fourth place finish in the 170 lb. division at Semi- State, while Barry was a runner-up in Semi-State in the 113 lb. division. Both Barry and Joe were defeated in the first round, and did not advance to the placement rounds. Barry finished the season with a record of 34-12, while Joe's record ended up 35-11, both excellent records. Both wrestlers represented the Roncalli Rebels in the IHSAA Tournament Series with competitive pride, enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
