Shortly after he was elected Pope, St. John XXIII decided to visit to the Regina Coeli prison in Rome.
Upon entering the prison, John XXIII found that the prison had been prepared for his arrival. Officials had worked hard to show the prison’s “best side.” There was even a red carpet laid down, dictating where the Pope was to walk.
True to his style, however, John XXIII soon veered off it. He chose instead to turn his focus to the forgotten areas of the facility. He walked up and down the dank and musty corridors greeting everyone along his path.
He stopped for a moment when he heard the voice of one particular prisoner. This prisoner had heard about the joviality and hopeful message of “Good Pope John,” but wondered if that message was for him. As the Pope walked by he said, “I have made a great many mistakes Holy Father.”
At that point, Good Pope John knelt over the kneeling man and raised him to embrace him saying, “I have looked into your eyes with my eyes. I have put my heart near your heart.”
As a Christian community, we seek to meet the eyes of all those we meet. Most of all, we seek to accompany students on their journey as they draw closer to Christ.
Pope Francis wrote in his Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel: [The] ‘art of accompaniment’…teaches us to remove our sandals before the sacred ground of the other (c.f. Ex 3:5). The pace of this accompaniment must be steady and reassuring, reflecting our closeness and our compassionate gaze which also heals, liberates and encourages growth in Christian life!” (169).
Like St. John XXIII, At Roncalli High School, we seek to encourage our students, faculty and staff to grow in the Christian life. We do this through a number of distinct ministries:
Pro Life Group
The Pro Life Group is focused on promoting the sanctity of life “from natural conception to natural death.” Their activities range from participating in the Annual March for Life in Washington D.C. performing talent shows for the elderly, and sorting donations at Adoption agencies like St. Elizabeth Coleman in Beech Grove. If you have any questions, please contact Shellie Hartford, Assistant Principal for Student Activities at firstname.lastname@example.org or Campus Minister Jeff Traylor at email@example.com.
Seniors have the privilege of serving at All School Liturgies as Eucharistic Ministers. Eucharistic Ministers must be confirmed, practicing Catholics who are in good standing with Roncalli and are willing to serve Jesus.
If you are a senior for the 2015-2016 school year and are interested in serving, please download the form, complete, and turn in to Mrs. Katie Hibner at firstname.lastname@example.org
Students are able to serve in various ministry roles at all school liturgies in the following areas:
- Gift Bearer
- Worship Team
If you are interested in serving in one of these roles, please contact Mrs. Katie Hibner, Liturgical Coordinator at email@example.com
Like to sing? We always need music ministers at mass!
If you are interested in serving as a member of the worship team, contact Sr. Cathy Anne Lepore, Liturgical Worship Team Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org.
