Girls Tennis 2019 Review
The girls tennis team played its best at the end of the season, capped by winning the program’s 11th sectional title. The Rebels defeated 20th-ranked Franklin Central 3-2 in the semifinal round, then topped Lutheran 5-0 in the final. The Rebels advanced to the regional, where they downed Southport 3-2 in the semifinal. In the final, the Rebels fell to eventual state semifinalist Center Grove. Despite losing 5-0, the match with Center Grove was much closer than it appeared, with all three singles matches going three sets or lasting over two hours. The Rebels finished the season with a 20-6 record and will have all seven players from its tournament lineup returning next season.
For the second straight year, juniors Emma Hess and Megan Zakrowski shared the team MVP honors. Hess was named to the All-Marion County team and the All-Circle City Conference team. Hess, who played number one singles, is the program’s first all-conference player in the three-year existence of the Circle City Conference. Zakrowski played number two singles. Sophomore Claire Wagner earned the team’s mental attitude award.
